How good is Foxtel in the Unibar? Thanks SRC.

In January the SRC Board passed a motion to approve the purchase and installation costs of a new TV at the Unibar and 50% of a Foxtel licence for the bar in 2026.

Put forward by the Revitalise faction, the share of the Foxtel licence will total at $4,000.

The vote on the motion passed with the support of the five Revitalise members.

Revitalise member Archie Howgate said that purchasing 50% of the Foxtel licence was a step towards reenergising the Unibar at Nathan.

“The decision came from looking at ways we could make the space more engaging for students, especially around big sporting events and shared moments that bring people together on campus,” Archie said.

UniBar manager, Shane Klumpp is excited about the SRC and UniBar partnership, saying it has ‘elevated the vibe’ of the place.

“This year the SRC has stepped up to work with the Australian Catering Company,” and “there is a good working relationship,” Shane said.

However, the motion did have its fair share of opposition from other SRC Board members.

Board members, Kore Opie, Kyle Low and Mariska Simpson opposed the motion as they did not see the value in giving student money to a private business for profit.

Independent board member, Mariska Simpson said that “SRC funds are student funds”.

“The SRC has previously taken a careful approach to providing financial support to private businesses. At the time, I did not think it was appropriate to use student money in a way that could potentially financially benefit a private business,” Mariska said.

Speaking on behalf of the Socialist Alternative faction, Kyle Low shared the same sentiments as Mariska saying that “It is completely outrageous” that Revitalise was handing student money to a private business.

“Live sports at the Uni Bar is not a significant issue facing students. The decline of student life is the result of rising living costs, which means students are working more, and cannot afford groceries, let alone a night out at a bar,” Kyle said.

Chairperson of the Board, Spencer Holzheimer, abstained from the vote.

The motion was one of Revitalise’s key campaign promises in the 2025 SRC Election.

Archie finished Revitalises statement saying that “It’s still early days for the policy, but we’re continuing to build on this by working with the Uni Bar to create more opportunities for students”.
