The 2025 Universities Rugby League Queensland competition is well underway, with
competition resting for the mid-year university break at the time of writing.
The Griffith Dragons currently sit third on the ladder, and are winless from their three games.
However, teams above have played five matches, giving them a couple of games in hand to
close the gap.
Their first game saw a large crowd for an ANZAC Day double header, with the Dragons
going down 26-40 against the QUT Trouts.
Their next two matches were played against the UQ Hounds, with a close loss in round 2 at
home, before a tough away fixture in round 3.
Reflecting on the season so far, club president Austin Mann believes that there is room for
improvement.
“We’ve demonstrated determination but also a lack of confidence,” he said.
Mr Mann has seen positives which he believes can be a blueprint for the future.
“In the second round against the Hounds, we regrouped and played patiently, resulting in our
closest scoreline.”
Off the back of the determination and resilience shown by the team, Mr Mann believes that
with a few refinements the Dragons can be right in the hunt for a premiership in 2025.
“With six rounds before the semi-finals, significant improvement is needed, especially in
handling and defence.
“If we use the mid-season break to refine our skills, we will come out on top in the second
half and travel to Davies Park for our first premiership battle since 2021.”
The Dragons six remaining fixtures include three at home, against QUT on July 23, USC on
July 30 and UQ on August 20. Their three remaining away fixtures include two against USC,
on July 16 and August 27, and against QUT on August 6.
